Add Captions

CLAS currently does not have a built-in closed caption/subtitles function. The following method will demonstrate how to use Kaltura within Canvas and Camtasia to place captions in your video before uploading to CLAS.

Generate Captions with Kaltura

  1. Go to My Media on Canvas
  2. Click Add New
  3. Select Media Upload

  1. Choose a file to upload to browse for a file from your computer
  2. Select a copyright permission
  3. Click Save
  4. After the video has finished uploading, select Go To Media

  1. Click Actions on the right side underneath the video and select Caption & Enrich from the drop-down menu

  1. Click Submit to send a request to generate machine captioning for your video

  • Captions may take up to 24 hours to be generated
  • The status of your request will change to Completed when captions are available
  1. When it is ready, return to the Actions drop-down menu and select Edit
  2. Choose Captions
  3. Download the .SRT captions file by clicking on the download icon

Embed Captions into the Video with Camtasia

If you do not already have the Camtasia application, you can download it at the UBC Software Portal.

  1. Open Camtasia and start a New Project
  2. Click Import Media… to open the video from your computer
  3. Hold and drag your video to Track 1

  1. Choose File located in the top left corner
  2. Select Import then Captions to upload the .SRT file from your computer

  1. Select the caption text to correct wording and formatting
    • Camtasia may insert extraneous line breaks in the captions. These can be removed by pressing backspace to remove the break.
  2. Once the video is ready, click Export located on the top right corner
  3. Select Local File…

  1. Choose an MP4 only format from the drop-down list
    • A warning may appear after clicking Next, please click OK to continue

  1. Add a title and choose a location where file will be saved on your computer
  2. Click Finish

  1. The video will now take some time to render before it is available
  2. Save the video project in Camtasia
  3. By default, exported videos are located within a folder in a Camtasia folder on your Computer. Locate the file and upload the finished video to CLAS
